candlelight

1 down , 3 more papers to go :) Can’t wait for the holidays to come. I think I’ve never looked forward to them as much as I am now.

The straits times reported today the first flooding in bukit timah in 50 years. I didn’t find it bad even when I was stuck on the bus for more than an hour from serene center to my home; a journey that would normally take 5min. I only realized the downpour’s severity when more cockroaches appeared in my house than usual, water began to seep into the lift shafts, cars began floating in the car park and power supply was cut.

Fortunately my dad was still at work otherwise his car would have to be towed away for repair as well.

As a result of the short circuit, I could only study with lit candles on the table, which was not easy at all because it was too dim and hot, and of course my tendency to experiment with fire.

Eventually I decided to pack my bag and head to a lamp post along the road to revise. But on my way out I noticed light from the function room and realized that someone was already studying there. So I went there instead and found out that the guy’s from nus too :) Well, it wasn’t very productive either cos we spent half the time talking, haha.

We only knew power was back again when we heard some cheering :) I couldn’t be happier to have my fan and lights running again, then I wouldn’t have to bathe and eat in darkness. Having said that, it was a unique experience for my family to have dinner around a candle :) And it was nice because although we could only see the lower half of our faces, we talked more than when we could see.

Before the power returned, my mom took out 2 boxes of candles. (And I was wondering in the past why she buys so many of those.) We went to give some to a few neighbours, which was when I realized the lobby was flooded as well.

After this incident, I felt grateful for the things I’ve taken granted for. Those in disaster struck areas have to face much harsher conditions and at least it was power supply that was cut off and not water.

As advanced as I think we are today, I felt so vulnerable and completely helpless before nature’s wrath. When I was stuck along bukit timah road on the bus, I wondered how a person could be rushed to a hospital in the event of an emergency. The main road and the small ones were completely jammed, walking was not possible due to the heavy downpour. If a tree was uprooted, even the vehicles with necessary equipment wouldn’t be able to get near it. If an underground cable broke, communication would fail. How scary.

Oh well, back to mugging.

CHRISTMAS! I’m coming! :D
